March 8th. in Kalispell, MT
A group of caring citizens comprised of parents,
educators and concerned individuals created an organization called
"Parents Committed to Kids". Their purpose is to help families of the
Flathead Valley improve their parenting skills and bring about positive
change through this education. Their first event was held at Majestic
Valley Arena on Monday, March 8th.
Parents and children from all over the Flathead
valley packed Majestic Valley Arena on Monday evening to hear an inspirational
presentation by Mac Bledsoe. The theme
of the event was “Parents Committed to Kids”.
Parents were told the five simple, powerful
rules
taught in Parenting with Dignity, and how to use them daily to get kids
to do what you want, while feeling good about themselves in the process!
Mac and Barbara Bledsoe's son Drew,
quarterback of the NFL's Buffalo Bills,
was on hand to take photos with the kids.
Upwards of 3,000 people were in
attendance. It exceeded everyone's expectations! The support
from our community was incredible and regrettably there were difficulties
due to the huge number of people. However, that only reinforces the
need for such events, and demonstrates how eager parents are to learn how
to become better at raising their kids.
Mac and the committee felt terrible that some people were turned away
because of the size of the crowd so another event is
scheduled just for those who couldn't make this one. It will take place on
April 27th. at Helena Flats school. Details and directions will be publicized as soon as
all is confirmed. Check back here to learn of the new schedule.
The "Parents Committed to Kids" committee are still
trying to reconcile the financials, and it appears that proceeds should
cover all expenses. The price of a ticket covered an entire family's
admission and chili dinner, which meant that this program wasn't designed
to be a money maker. Reaching families was the goal and we
accomplished that mission spectacularly. Any surplus funds will be
dispersed by the committee to support parent education here in the
Flathead Valley. Due to the generosity of many local area businesses, we
were able to offer scholarship tickets confidentially to many families and
agencies that would otherwise not have been able to attend.
Mac was quoted as saying, "this event must serve as
the beginning of a movement to improve the lives of children in this
wonderful Flathead Valley. We must insure that the momentum we started
continues".
