Mr. Mac Bledsoe, President and Founder
Drew Bledsoe Foundation
5 Lincoln Road
Foxboro, MA 02035
Dear Mac,
When I started work at the Prison School in the Idaho Correctional Institution
(ICI-O) in Orofino in March of 1997, I realized there needed to be a Family
and Parenting Education component to help students (inmates) focus on their
priorities in life. I saw a need to blend academic and vocational education
with their life skills and character building-Parenting with Dignity helped
meet this need.
It has been over 2 ½ years since we have included the Parenting with Dignity
program into our Prison School curriculum at ICI-O. The interest in and
results of the Parenting with Dignity coursework in our Family Values class
has been overwhelming-307 students have completed the 20-hour course since
January 1999. We have very few education staff in our school. We have combined
the video series with our classroom training to maximize our instruction; we
can work with other students while students watch the videos. In my 28 years
of Education experience, Parenting with Dignity is one of the best video
series, I have seen, that maintains a high level of attention of large groups
of students without a facilitator in the classroom-this is unusual in a prison
setting.
Our pilot project using Parenting with Dignity is expanding to other prison
schools within our Adult Corrections system. The North Idaho Correctional
Institution (NICI), Idaho's prison diversionary boot camp, is, now, using
Parenting with Dignity in their Life Skills Curriculum. Enclosed in this
letter we are sending you student testimonials from NICI and ICI-O who have
completed the course.
We work to provide information, education and hope to our students who have
failed in society. Parenting with Dignity is a valuable component that assists
us in preparing inmates for release from prison. Thank you for your support
and keep up the great work.
Sincerely,
Jim Rehder,
Education Program Manager-ICI-O |
